We’ve seen photos of it, we’ve heard a number of details and rumors about it, and now we finally have the release date for the Oculus Rift. The VR headset in question will become available during the first quarter of 2016. The exact date and price are yet to be announced.

First revealed as a Kickstarter project back in August 2012, the creators of the Oculus Rift managed to raise $2.4 million by offering kits to developers interested in virtual reality, at the price of $300. After getting its funding, the company was purchased by Facebook in 2014 for $2 billion.

The original kit (the DK1) came with a 1280 x 720 resolution, a 60-hertz refresh rate, and no positional tracking. In the summer of 2014, the company released a second generation kit (the DK2): it arrived with a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen, and a camera for positional tracking. A couple of months after that, the company showcased an even better version of the OR, codenamed Crescent Bay.

Oculus VR wasn’t the firts company to try its hand at virtual reality, nor was it the last. After the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign came Sony’s Morpheus headset, and the HTC Vive, both of which should arrive in 2016, too.
