The Lunchbox: Magnum Opus

Posted on the 21 September 2013 by Rukhaiyaaramrit
The lunchbox is a modern legend; a film that represents the whole Hindi film industry to the western part of the world, where comparatively better films are made and it is necessary to show that we have the potential to make great originally written films as well. One can figure out that The Lunchbox is going to be India’s official entry to the Oscars for best foreign film in 2014, and who knows it may win as well, it surely can.

The Lunchbox: Magnum Opus
This is the story of two lonely souls, Saajan and Ila, played by Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur respectively. Saajan is a lonely widower while Ila, a neglected housewife are accidently connected to each other through a lunchbox with letters in it.  Even though they are strangers, they share their experiences of life and emotional thoughts through these letters without even meeting each other. Lunchbox unfolds many new aspects of love, and an answer that defines love brilliantly. Love has no fixed set of rules, it can happen between strangers; with people you have never met. There are great performances by Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Irrfan and Nawazuddin are such method actors that totally immerse themselves into the skin of the character, it’s a real treat having to see both of them share screen space together. It was a tremendous 2012, when we watched Irrfan and Nawazuddin doing their masterstroke performances in Paan Singh Tomar and Gangs of Wasseypur respectively, the Lunchbox is a magnum opus which is the 2013 equivalent for PST and GOW.

About Nimrat Kaur, she is going to have a great cinematic career; I hope she stays away from the charm of commercial cinema. She has a beautiful face and a natural approach to acting. For the entertainment seeker, the film was a little bit slow towards the end but I am glad it was like that, full marks to the direction of Ritesh Batra and he did a fantastic job. I hope we get to watch more lunchboxes in the future.
