The Lowdown – Heroes

Posted on the 03 August 2020 by Booksocial

Can you believe it’s August already? In a year where we have clapped for the NHS using frying pans and wooden spoons we thought this month we would celebrate a very different kind of Heroes…

Stuff of legend

Heroes is Stephen Fry’s second book delving into Greek myths (the first being Mythos). A third, Troy, is due out later this year. Heroes, subtitled ‘Mortals and Monsters, Quests and Adventures’ is classed as a companion to Mythos and takes in Jason and the Golden Fleece (not the pub), Oedipus and his eyeballs and a certain winged horse named Pegasus. Looking at the very best and worst of what mere mortals are capable of we haven’t read Mythos but we WILL be reading Heroes and would love you to join us.

Heroes – the blurb

Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils, or outwitted scheming vengeful gods, quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes.

In this companion to his bestselling Mythos, Stephen Fry brilliantly retells these dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales. Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta – who was raised by bears – outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera.

Filled with white-knuckle chases and battles, impossible puzzles and riddles, acts of base cowardice and real bravery, not to mention murders and selfless sacrifices, Heroes is the story of what we mortals are truly capable of.
