The Lowdown – Accident on the A35

Posted on the 03 July 2020 by Booksocial

And so comes July and with it a sense of lifting of the previous lock down conditions. As summer steps up a gear it’s only natural our thoughts turn to holidays. Those of us not planning one this year (or who have had it cancelled) can take solace in books. Step inside one and you can literally be anywhere in the world. With that in mind, this month we have deliberately chosen a book set outside of the UK. Not only that but it’s relatively light so would fit in a suitcase if you happened to be traveling anywhere…

His Bloody Book

You may remember the name Graeme Macrae Burnet from our review of His Bloody Project a little while back. The book, set around a triple murder in 1860s Highlands was strikingly authentic for its fictional tale giving rise to a ‘false true crime’ description.

Graeme has since gone on to write Accident On The A35 and it is this book that we have chosen as our book of the month. Set in rural France, Accident also has an element of ‘tricksy fiction’ whereby he inserts himself into the tale and an element of ‘false truth’ is present.

Accident on the A35 – the blurb

There does not appear to be anything remarkable about the fatal car crash on the A35. But one question dogs Inspector Georges Gorski: where has the victim, an outwardly austere lawyer, been on the night of his death? The troubled Gorski finds himself drawn into a mystery that takes him behind the respectable veneer of the sleepy French backwater of Saint-Louis.
