The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

Posted on the 09 June 2021 by Booksocial

We visit the Last House on Needless Street where nothing is at it seems.

Needless Street – the blurb

This is the story of a murderer. A stolen child. Revenge. This is the story of Ted, who lives with his daughter Lauren and his cat Olivia in an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.

All these things are true. And yet some of them are lies.

You think you know what’s inside the last house on Needless Street. You think you’ve read this story before. But you’re wrong. In the dark forest at the end of Needless Street, something lies buried. But it’s not what you think…

Without a clue

I text my friend on page 170 of this book to say I was enjoying it but didn’t have a clue what was going on. I remained that way for most of the 300 odd pages and am not sure I have it all straight in my head even now I’ve read it all. You go in to Needless Street knowing it’s a twisty one but are told to stay with it, it will all make sense. Every page is filled with anticipation – is this the one where the SAW like twist comes? Will I know what I’m reading by the end of this paragraph?

I’m not going to give the game away so I won’t go into the twists and turns too much. It was very different, I appreciated where Ward went with it and the colossal effort it must have taken to pull it off. How on earth do you write from a God fearing cats perspective? I really struggled though with the unstable surface I was stood on whilst reading. The rug was constantly being pulled out from underneath me and I felt like I needed a lie down afterwards.

Lots of people have read Needless Street and loved it. If you like to wrestle your reads, have them mess with your mind a little and come out the other side victorious then you will too. I’m still processing it.
