The Importance of Getting Away From It All

By Shauntee @shaunteebattie

The Importance of Getting Away From It AllI have no idea what it is, but it seems that every time I take a nice long vacation I come back to Chicago and get sick. When I return from someplace tropical or humid, I immediately come home and catch a sinus infection. Maybe that’s the universe way of telling me I should stay away permanently. I wanted to write a brief post about my trip and all the fabulous things I did and experienced. So in a nutshell here it is:

My vacation started in Orlando, Florida; I got splashed by Shamu in SeaWorld, kidnapped by pirates, and had to much Saxon Rum Punch. I got up the next day drove the Tahoe I rented 3 hours to Miami in record speed to pick up my mom and friend from the airport. Relaxed at the resort we stayed in, got a wonderful massage, ate wayyyyy too much, and witnessed the makings of Hurricane Isaac.

On Saturday, we boarded the Carnival Freedom and I walked around as if I was drunk (maybe I was) all night because of rough waters as the ship went around the hurricane. Relaxed in the sauna and steam room and ate wayyyyy too much. Toured the beauty of Grand Turks in the British West Indies and traveled through the slums of LaRamona Dominican Republic. I also dirty danced with a local and smoked a Dominican cigar. Visited the beautiful island of Curacao, laid out on the beach and fell in love with vibrant colors and scenery of the island. I also ate wayyyyyy too much, gambled too much, and found myself doing random dance moves at the drop of a hat.

Visited Aruba (definitely worth another visit) held on tight on a speedboat, climbed through a cave in a short sundress while flashing every man behind me (I told every last one of them “you’ll never forget me”) went to the Holiday Inn Palm Beach (the same hotel Natalee Holloway went missing from), screamed I will survive at a piano bar with my sister and family, and flirted shamelessly with everyone.

Finally, on the last day, I woke up with a pulled muscle in my thigh and walked around like I had hip replacement surgery. I had to be push around the airport in a wheel chair. When the flight attendant at the gate asked me what happened I told him “I had an awesome vacation full of tequila” and everyone in the surrounding areas laughed. I brought 3 friends home with me brandy, rum, and cognac! Did I mention I ate wayyyyy too much? Every time I go on vacation I realize the importance of just taking some time to get away from it all. The memories and the experiences I have had makes it all worthwhile.

Travel tip: Get drunk, have fun, dirty dance, dance for no reason, shop, try new things, and laugh a lot.

Now that I got all of that out the way, I look forward to returning to my regularly scheduled programming because I have much to write about!
