I have to admit that I didn’t watch this movie at the cinema but not because I thought in particular this one didn’t deserve it. It is just that in this period I don’t go often to the movies. I think this is due to my lifestyle but it depends of my taste that along the way, it has become more and more sophisticated and demanding. I know very well that the majority of people want entertainment but this fact not freaks me, I don’t need to watch a movie to find the way of laughing. Life Itself I believe, if you take it too seriously it becomes a tragedy, and if you take it with joy becomes a joke.I prefer artistic films but the problem is to find through all this quantity of movies, a quality one. Nowadays there is an huge film production in almost every country of the world but for me are not particularly interesting because most of those follow marketing rules. At the end money win, even against the artistic mood, because the producers want to give what the audience asks, and so the artist is not free to creates what wants.Living in Italy for me was easy hearing soon about “La grande bellezza”. Despite this, at first I didn’t pay too much attention on it, because here in recent years have not been made excellent films, and so I was a bit unmotivated to check new Italian stuff. However, I have been intrigued by this movie for the simple fact that, through the internet and television, I saw how little by little it was becoming a succession of awards won in every country. When I recognized that, I started thinking It could win also the Oscar, and indeed this is what happened. I knew long before they were making this film, but its implementation has been almost silent, without too many echoes and noises even here in Italy where actually they were shooting. So all this international success has been to me like an unexpected lightning. From this fact, I started to get interested at this work. Finally I watched when they broadcasted in a Mediaset Tv for the first time, and I can say that It is not only a movie, but an art work. This is a movie made of paintings. Of course I know very well that the international success of this film is due in large part by its characters, but I want to remember the exceptional outdoor shootings. The reality sometimes is less romantic than our imagination, so who visited Rome knows what I am talking about: crowd always in the streets, terrifying traffic, tourist traps and so on. But in this movie the city becomes a dreamlike place. The city here finds Its right size, where a monument, a square, the Colosseum or a Baroque Church become the real protagonist of the scene. They observe all the events of the various characters, who are trying to give a meaning to their lives. Once again life imitates art and not vice-versa, how ignorant believe.The comparison with “La dolce vita” is a trivial fact, but I guess it can also be done. But even if this can be seen as a film about Rome, I think that one of the most important scenes, paradoxically, it has been made out of the Capital; near the end there is a striking scene in which Jep Gambardella, or a “ Luciano Pacini older alter ego”, looks down on the hulking body of a cruise ship run aground off the coast of Tuscany. This is definitely a great metaphor, for a career, for a life, for a country. In fact, despite various incidents that can happen during a human existence, a new sunrise is already coming.In the final credits the camera glides down on the Tiber.
