The Franklin Electric out of Montreal, put on an amazing show last night at The Drake Underground and we were there to take it all in. The second of two sold out shows, found the band excited and enthusiastic. Let me just add a side note - I love this venue for live music. I love the size, the acoustics, the location, the staff.
A four piece, alternative folk-pop band, The Franklin Electric is made up of Jon Matte, lead vocals, trumpet, guitar and piano, Liam Killen, vocals and drums, Martin Desrosby, vocals and bass, and Alex Messier on guitar and banjo. The harmonies are rich and natural. The lyrics are thoughtful and provoking, the musicianship is superb and it was a privilege to watch this performance.
They played songs from the This is How I Let You Down album, including the title track and The Old Piano, and Unsatisfied. They played a couple of new songs, which will be on the upcoming album, when it's ready. Old or new, the audience was right there with them. They let us know that there's a new video in the works for Strongest Man Alive and it should be out very, very soon.
They've been busy touring, writing and recording and this isn't their first stop in Toronto. They were here in February when they opened for Ben Howard at Massey Hall for two sold out shows and we're hoping they feel at home here and come back often. They've been compared to Imagine Dragons, The Lumineers, and Mumford and Sons who were also in town last night. They're doing all the right things, having just finished two dates at SXSW, they're also on the line up for Osheaga.
