The Films I’m Anticipating: Quentin Dupieux’s “WRONG” (2012)

Quentin Dupieux, an electronic musician turned director, has made a total of four films, each one stranger than the last, and filled with daunting promise. His most famous is his third feature, 2010’s Rubber, an darkly comic and divisive story of a tire that inexplicably comes to life and begins murdering people. Some critics praised it, some condemned it, and audiences, whether perplexed or engrossed, admitted it was quite something indeed. It is one of two of Dupieux’s films I have seen so far, and the only one that is widely seen at all. His previous films are Nonfilm (which he uploaded to the Internet for public viewing and which I will be reviewing shortly) and Steak, quintessentially indie experiments that have garnered small groups of fans.

Since I’ve decided to start a new feature here at Southern Vision, The Films I’m Anticipating, I decided to kick it off with Dupieux’s newest film, Wrong, which has impressed and annoyed audiences at festivals across the globe and has yet to make it to DVD. It is the story of a man who desperately attempts to find his lost dog, but it is also much more than that. It is filled to the brim with almost overwhelming surreal and senseless imagery, and a nonsensical plot which has befuddled many. Normally I wouldn’t be interested, but after seeing the trailer I just cannot resist and am eagerly awaiting this film’s release. Have a look at the trailer below and let me know if it interests you.
