I always like to jump into a new series from the beginning and I also want to try reading a bit more horror comics so I thought this might be the perfect chance to kill 2 birds with one stone. I saw The Empty Man pop up as a new release so I thought I would give it a go. The description for the book reads as follows:
It’s been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, “empty” state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.
It seems to be more of a disease that is horrifying. Not necessarily the zombie type but it seems to be making people in the book do some crazy things. While someone was explaining what had happened a few years back, he described people feeding their newborn to the dogs because it apparently whispered to them that they wanted to be killed. Another ran into oncoming traffic because their meatloaf looked like their Grandpa. Like I said, crazy stuff. We know a little of what happened in the past and now it seems to be happening again. With another “incident” happening with a married couple, two detectives from the FBI-CDC Task Force are trying to find some answers. Things can get a bit ugly I could imagine.
While I am not the biggest fan of the art on this book, the story is a bit intriguing. Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gunn and Venom) is a creator and writer on this series. I have noticed that when writers get to work on creator owned projects, they put a bit more heart and soul into the books…or obvious reasons. I might check out a few more from this series to see what this disease will do.
