Happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
And washed it away, down the kitchen sink
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
-Florence And The Machine
That moment. When you find the treasure at the end of your rainbow. When you realize that life will always have hard times. You will work in some shit day jobs, sometimes you will feel lonely, often you will be wrong and occasionally you won't measure up to your own, or another's idea of success. But then one unimportant day you open your eyes, and there is an absence of something. An absence of weight. An absence of the burning in your stomach. An absence of all the doubt. And you understand that the elusive thing you were searching for, called happiness, was sitting there beside you all along. But it was a choice, not a gift or a promise. So you chose to be happy, it was not handed to you. Sometimes it was hidden behind curtains of grief, or the frustration of the daily grind, or under periods of creative silence, or covered by the hurtful words of another. But these things are life and necessary and are actually a part of contentment you see. And then you feel powerful and much more in control. Because the idea that we can just choose to be happy is a powerful one indeed. As is the realisation that you've done the work, done the time, read the book, and the dog days are well and truly over.
Much love xx
