The catacombe in Palermo
Under the light of the sun all shine, but the land hidden some mysteries. The life and the death are very closely linked to the mother earth in many cults. Ancient and modern traditions often seem to be hidden in the belly of the earth. The ancient Egyptians used to embalm their dead. This technique was not used only by them. During the centuries, it was preserved and developed in Palermo. Who would ever say that under the magnificent Sicilian sun light and the vivid colors of this beautiful island , there is one of the largest underground cemeteries of the world? There are over 8,000 mummies preserved in the convent of the Capuccini in Palermo .
The mommy of Rosalia Lombardo
One of the most amazing examples of this work is the body of a child , Rosalia Lombardo. She seems to be asleep, in spite of the time passed! This child died for a flu in 1920, she was two years old. She would seem died yesterday as she is very well preserved! I’m always surprised how the men fight the time and their largest ancestral fear, the death. In any case, the Catacombs of Palermo are truly a unique place to visit and they will leave you a mark. Warning : don’t visit this place if you are claustrophobic or if you are an highly emotional person. Alla luce del sole tutto splende, ma la terra nasconde dei misteri. La vitae la morte sono così strettamente legati alla madre terra in moltissimi culti. Tradizioni antiche e moderne sembrano nascondersi delle volte nel ventre della terra. Gli antichi egizi erano soliti imbalsamare i loro defunti. Questa tecnica non era loro esclusiva. Nel corso dei secoli questa tecnica fu adottata e sviluppata a Palermo. Chi direbbe mai che sotto il magnifico sole siciliano i colori chiari e vivaci di questa magnifica isola esiste uno dei più grandi cimiteri sotterranei del mondo? Si pensa che ci siano ben 8.000 salme conservate sotto il convento dei Cappuccini di Palermo ed uno degli esempi più eclatanti di questo lavoro è la salma di una bambina: Rosalia Lombardo. Sembra essersi addormentata, in barba a l tempo che passava! La bambina morì di influenza nel 1920 a soli due anni, sembrerebbe deceduta ieri quanto è ben conservata. Mi sorprendente vedere come l’uomo tenti in ogni modo di combattere il tempo e la sua più grande ancestrale paura. In ogni caso le catacombe di Palermo sono veramente un luogo unico da vedere che lascia il segno dentro: le sconsiglio a chi soffre di claustrofobia o a chi sia particolarmente sensibile ed impressionabile. Laggiù signori e signore , il sole non è il ben venuto e la vita si ferma all’ingresso.
