The Cape Story- Style Swap Tuesdays

By Saumya Shiohare @myriadmusings1
We always have that one piece in our closet that is close to our heart, has a memorable story and that we cherish forever. Well, the piece I'm referring to today isn't exactly close to my heart, but it sure has a unique story that makes it special.
Circa July 2018, my sister and I went on a shopping date and she bought this designer cape ( the last piece ) at a store in Delhi. I liked it but I wasn't sure how I would wear it, so I ignored. Two months later my inner voice spoke to me ' buy this cape from your sister '! I still wasn't sure why I should buy it but Pinterest gave me a billion ideas to style a cape like this. Moreover, the upcoming December wedding in the family, where I was planning to wear this lehnga skirt with this green cape, made me ask my sister if she would sell the cape to me. Well, good news- she hadn't worn the cape and had it brand new with tags attached. I was pumped and made all arrangements to transfer the funds to her. Unfortunately, the wedding got called of and I had to cancel my tickets to India. The cape now became history.......

Couple months later my sister revisited the whole ' cape buying situation' as she was planning on wearing it to another wedding. I declined......! But something happened and she couldn't attend the wedding. A few weeks later my sister asked me the final time if I was interested in the cape coz she was going to loan it to her sister-in-law for an event. I declined........yet another time! Something happened again and my sister's SIL ended up wearing something else and not this cape.
Fast forward May 2019, a local friend's family was visiting from India and my friend asked me if I needed anything from India. I had an Indian wedding to attend here in VA in June and hence I requested my sister to drop off some of my traditional clothing at this friend's in-laws house. A few days later the package arrived in US and to my surprise- there was this cape ( tags still attached ). My sister sent it to me without confirming as she wanted me to have it. Well, I was excited but still unassertive of the styling options.
A year later the cape came to me, brand new. I wasn't as much excited about the outfit as much as I was for pulling out the tags. It was like a long-lost-love found. It is kind of a classic that never goes out of style. The same designer came out with other colors in the same style, but this green remains my fave. I thought it was going to be a lot easier to style this cape, but I had the hardest time figuring out outfits. I reluctantly wore this outfit with the white jeans- it looks doable....
A few days later, post this photoshoot, my sister visited us in US and I decided to part with this cape once and for all and gave it back to her. She took it back to India and has already worn it a few different ways. I guess this cape is meant to be styled more in an Indian traditional way. I am happy that this cape finally found a permanent home and is with the most suitable deserving owner, but I am happier as I got to snip the label and wear it first-hand....... SORRY SISTER!
