The Best Celebrity Court Attire

Yes, celebrities are just like normal people– they too, have to appear in court from time to time. Need some inspiration on what to wear to an upcoming court date? Take some guidance from these celebrities. Though their wardrobe budgets are undeniably a little more generous than the average person, it is easy to find similar looks from more affordable stores.

Celebrity Court Looks

  • Rihanna. For her 2009 court appearance in which she testified against her then-boyfriend Chris Brown, the pop star took a surprisingly modest route. Ditching her skin-tight and revealing normal clothing, or lack thereof, Rihanna appeared wearing a demure black shift dress with a strand of pearls. This is probably the most wholesome appearance Rihanna has made, and I have to say I think it works for her.
  • Winona Ryder. The actress who faced shoplifting charges in 2002 presented herself as-sweet-as-can-be for her court appearance. Ryder wore a modest black dress and sweet off-white heels, but the most memorable article has to be her hair accessory. The actress chose a black headband to contribute to the sweet and innocent image she hoped to portray.
  • Paris Hilton. The famous heiress has had her fair share of court appearances. Though she is known to leave little to the imagination in her free time, she usually seems to appear modest and respectable in court. Although in this look, she probably could have used a little less cleavage.
  • Kirsten Dunst. A black shift dress is very popular among celebrities for their court appearances. Kirsten Dunst chose to wear one, along with a black sweater and matching designer bag. This is a great example of what a great court outfit looks like.
  • Lindsay Lohan. Though the child star has had too many court appearances to count, she usually dresses well for the occasion. Other times, she undeniably falls short. Lindsay is best dressed when she stays away from revealing or skin tight clothing and focuses on more modest, chic looks. Her pantsuits are some of her best choices.
  • Naomi Campell. Although the famous model might have anger issues and a past of inexcusable behavior, she does have one thing right–she knows how to dress for court. Campell sticks to black and gray dresses(women dresses) that gives her a sophisticated and professional vibe.
  • Nicole Richie. Nicole should probably win the award  for best court attire. She chose a sweet Audrey Hepburn-esque look, donning a classic black shift dress and a pretty updo. Her fashion choice obviously worked for her–she ended up spending only 82 minutes in jail for her drinking and driving charges.

What can we learn from celebrity court ensembles?

As a general rule of thumb, you cannot go wrong with a dark-colored, tailored dress. Things go awry when celebrities try to appear overly trendy or sexy. Simple is best when appearing in court, and these celebrities definitely go to show that appearing modest does not always mean looking dowdy–but dressing simply can portray a kind of sophistication that every person brushed with the law needs.
