The 5 Biggest Misconceptions About GPS Tracking

Posted on the 15 October 2011 by Fleetmatics @fleetmatics

GPS fleet management is a hot topic for business owners and fleet managers these days, and we all know with a “hot topic” comes several misconceptions. We’ve kept our ears open for these misconceptions in hopes of clearing them up!

1. “All of my guys will quit.”

If you read our blog post on “Drivers and GPS Tracking: Love/Hate Relationship,” you will see that drivers, in general, love GPS fleet management. 1) It gives them proof of service should there be any discrepancies between the customer and the driver; 2) Vehicle theft is no longer a problem. If a driver’s vehicle is stolen, the company can immediately track it down; and 3) They can provide the ultimate customer service.

2. “It ruins the trust I have established in my company.”

If anything, GPS fleet management should further build the trust you have established in your company. So you trust your drivers already? Great! How about an incentive/reward program using the GPS tracking reports? The driver with the lowest idling time for the week wins a gift card to his favorite restaurant! Don’t look at it as “me” vs. them. It’s about everyone being on the same page.

3. “I don’t have time to use it.”

GPS tracking software doesn’t have to be a time suck. When you’re shopping for a system, make sure to find out if it’s built for ease of use. You should be able to get at the key information you need quickly and get out. Some systems even provide mobile versions and email or text alerts about critical events, meaning you don’t even need to be near a computer.

4. “My fleet size is too small.”

We typically see a return on fleet sizes of five or more vehicles. You don’t need to have 200 fleet vehicles to witness the benefits of gps tracking. Fleets with gps vehicle tracking range in size from five to 2,000… it’s not the size of the fleet that matters, it’s the savings the company experiences.

5. “I can’t afford   GPS Fleet Management.”

One of our customers once said it better than we ever could… “You can’t afford to NOT have GPS vehicle tracking installed on your fleet.” You don’t realize the amount of money your company is wasting on factors like unnecessary idling, inefficient routes, incorrect time sheets, personal vehicle use and more.
