Ever since I heard Phillip Phillips perform this song on American Idol Wednesday night, it’s been stuck in my head. I love Genesis and even though I know this song very well, I don’t listen to it too often. Since it’s been staying with me, I thought it would be perfect for tonight’s entry. Thanks Phil for the Genesis auto play! (And I mean Phillips this time…not Collins!) haha
That’s All was released as a single on Halloween of 1983 from their twelfth album, Genesis. It went to #6 on the charts in 1984 giving the group their first top ten hit in the United States. It went to #6 in the UK as well.
Basing interpretation solely on lyrics, the song describes a failing relationship. No matter how hard he tries to make it work, his attempts fail. I’m not sure how the video really connects to this idea though. The three band members play homeless men playing cards and keeping warm at an open fire. What are your thoughts?
