Late last week, Disney announced Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, a brand new series set for a summer debut. As per THR, it will revolve “around the Freemakers, a family of scavengers who build and sell starships from the scoured debris of space battles strewn throughout the galaxy. When their youngest discovers a natural connection with the Force through an ancient artifact — the Kyber Saber — his world is turned upside down, and he and his family are thrown into an epic struggle against the Empire to restore peace and freedom to the galaxy.”
Similar to Star Wars Rebels, they will encounter allies and villains, some of whom will be unique to the series while others will be familiar members of Star Wars canon. Freemaker will take place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The way Freemaker Adventures is using the “Kyber Saber” as its McGuffin reminds me of Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles’ race for the holocrons, i.e., the data cubes containing the recorded history of the Empire. Of course, there is more of an Excalibur quality to Freemaker‘s idea of an ancient light saber which must be re-assembled as the ultimate tool against the Emperor, who also wants it, as indicated by his childish “gimme, gimme, gimme” moment in the trailer. According to io9, this is actually a new idea in the Star Wars universe:
The Kyber Saber is a saber made purely of the crystal that creates other lightsabers. So, for example, Luke or Darth Vader’s lightsaber has a single small kyber crystal in it. That’s what powers it. This saber, on the other hand, is completely made of that crystal. It’s something totally new to this universe, and also something that’s very attractive to the Emperor. (But it’s not technically canon, since this is a Lego show.)
Huh. I mostly liked that part where the robot says, “I have a bad feeling about this,” before falling down. Robot fall down, go boom. I get jokes.
The Lego Star Wars cartoons are always a light-hearted delight, filled with endless in-jokes and a spot-on parody of Ian McDiarmid’s legendary over-acting as the Emperor. I’m not completely sold on Freemaker Adventures after this trailer, though. It doesn’t look nearly as inspired as the prior Lego Star Wars animated efforts, but I might only think that because those relied upon characters we already knew whereas Freemaker is giving us brand new characters. We’ll get to know all of them sometime over the summer when the show debuts.
