I’m fairly certain this is the first song I ever heard by Tori Amos. Along with “A Sorta Fairytale,” it was frequently played on the radio when it first came out. I even bought the album and listened to it in high school. However, I couldn’t get into any of her other albums except for two tracks, “Crucify” and “Spark” from several years earlier.
Taxi Ride was released as a single in January of 2003 from Tori’s seventh studio album, Scarlet’s Walk. It went to #35 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Songs. For the music video, a contest was held for fans to submit their own take on the song. I’m not sure who won so instead, a live video from the Scarlet Sessions is featured above.
It’s hard to say what the lyrics are truly about. There are hints of love, deception, insecurity, devotion, and acceptance…all the things that make up the roller coasters in life. What’s your take on it?
