Meatballs are one of my favorite foods, but I find myself getting bored with the tradition Italian style recipes out there. Meatballs are incredibly versatile, and they can be flavored with spices and flavors associated with many different cuisines. I think meatballs lend themselves wonderfully to Asian flavors, just think of all those dumplings you’ve ever eaten. More often than not, there’s some ground up meat filling in those, right? So, let’s take the filling out of a traditional Asian dumpling, and turn them into deliciously sweet and tangy meatballs!
1 pound ground pork or ground beef1 cup baby portabello mushrooms, minced
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 teaspoons sesame oil
1/2 cup Panko or breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 egg
4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup minced onion
1/4 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup parsley, chopped
1 cup thai sweet chili sauce
In a small saucepan, heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil. Saute the mushrooms, onion and garlic for 4-5 minutes, until they’re tender and wilted. Remove them from the heat and set aside to cool.
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, sesame oil, panko, egg, cooked veggies, five spice, parsley and soy sauce.
Form 1″ meatballs and place them onto a baking sheet lined with a baking rack.
Broil the meatballs at 425 degrees F until the meatballs and browned and cooked through.
While the meatballs are still hot, brush them with the sweet chili sauce, then serve.
