How's the weather?
Yesterday, I learned the word "graupel." That's the word for the tiny white spheres that fell from the sky during our weekly Black Lives Matter vigil. One of our group members knew the word, but I didn't quite remember it when I got home. Weather.gov has a helpful page of winter weather terms.
What are you reading?
Eleanor Roosevelt, Volume 2, by Blanche Wiesen Cook. It took me half of last year to read Volume 1. Now, I'm slowly making my way through the even larger Volume 2. The information that I really want to absorb is what Roosevelt's life was like during World War II. That's in Volume 3! I'm reading this as an ebook and appreciating that I can keep checking it out over and over again and that I don't have to hold up a weighty tome to read it.
Ten Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby. After I watched the Netflix comedy special, Nanette, by Hannah Gadsby, the feeling that I was most left with was "I want more." Here it is. Gadsby reads the audiobook of her autobiography, and it feels like having her in the room to tell her story.
What are you watching?
I just finished Munich: The Edge of War on Netflix. I'm sure that will show up in a British Isles Friday post soon.
We watch movies most nights. In the last week, we most enjoyed The Swimmers, The Incredible Jessica James, and Ali's Wedding - all streaming on Netflix. Last night, we started watching The Pale Blue Eye which we're loving for the dialogue and the verisimilitude of 1830 upstate New York.
We also spent an inordinate amount of time watching congress people vote for the Speaker of the House.
What are you writing?
I'm also working on a handout for an annual event to recruit volunteers to talk to school board candidates, letting them know that their community cares about racial equity in education and teaching them how our school districts are working toward that. We did something new in the fall - held a training session to address worries that volunteers have about these conversations. I'm taking the material generated from that session to make this handout that will serve as a reminder to the people who attended and a resource to people who couldn't make it.
What are you doing?
I like to spend the 12 Days of Christmas, Christmas to Epiphany, working on my plans for the new year. This year, I moved from using a DIY physical planner to Evernote. I've used Evernote for a few things for more than a decade, but I never successfully used it as the foundation for my planning.
A couple of years ago, Evernote added the ability to add tasks to notes. Now, I can have my tasks in the context of my projects. I'll still use a physical planner to plan my weeks, but the projects are now stored digitally. I'm also having lots of fun setting up recurring tasks to implement various routines.
This week, I get to test out the system!
