Sunday Salon — December 8

logo for The Sunday SalonGood morning!

Time: // 8:38 am

The scene: // There’s snow on the ground! Accumulating snow is a bit unusual for December in Missouri. Areas south of us got 10 inches or more. We got just a couple, but it’s not going away for a few days because we got a cold snap at the same time.

Listening to: // Gospel Christmas on Accuradio.

cover of The Signature of All Things

Can I finish this giant novel before I accumulate a fortune in library fines?

Reading: //  The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. The library wants it back now and I’m not quite half-way through. Oops. I’m thinking about reading all day.

Blogging about: //

Two book reviews this week:

  • Provence, 1970 by Luke Barr. Culinary leaders M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, and James Beard spend a month or so in France while considering American cuisine. And eating, of course.
  • Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America by Lerone Bennett, Jr. Our most recent selection for the diversity book club deepened and broadened our sense of American History. The news about Nelson Mandela’s death broke just before our meeting, so our gathering felt like a way to honor a man whose life demonstrated the long arc of the moral universe bending towards justice.

Another night, I went to Garden Glow, the Christmas light show at the Missouri Botanical Garden. I posted conventional photos the next day, saving my experimental work for Saturday to display with the Saturday Snapshot link-up. Check it out for a description of a technique to paint with light to create festive photos for the holiday season.

Looking forward to: // Announcing the second annual New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge. If you can’t wait, read last year’s announcement — I’ll set it up in a similar way. Does anyone have a suggestion for a Read-Along book? Something that helps with goals or resolutions or project completion? Last year, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg put us in the right frame of mind.

What are you up to this fine Sunday?
