Tales from the front:

For the entertainer, the show must go on

Mortgage lenders and auto companies may be looking for a bailout. But for Steve Zany, the show must go on.

Zany is a global public relations consultant whose best-known talent is performing as a ventriloquist, magician and balloon-bender at children’s parties, schools and public occasions for over 20 years.

He’s even appeared at the White House.

If there’s any economic crisis in parents making sure that kids have fun on their birthdays, however, Zany hasn’t seen it. last December, he says, was his best in several years.

“I’ve been through a number of recessions in this business,” he said. “And what I find is that parents may cut back on other things, but they’ll still spend money on their kids.”

Zany says he’s still in demand although he’s sensitive to the economic hard times.

To cater to stretched budgets, Zany now offers shorter appearances than his customary one-hour gig.

Fees start at $195.

The Attleboro resident discovered his talent for throwing his voice and entertaining in college and considered making it his full-time job.

But although his performance schedule is a busy one, he said he enjoys keeping magic as a second vocation.

“I like to keep it at the level where I’m always doing it for the love of it,” he said.
