Summer in Hollywood 2017

Posted on the 27 April 2017 by Remesh Venkitachalam
This is one of the most anticipated summers ever for every movie fans. Every week is bringing back something we hold dear. Most of it are sequels, but there might be a few original gems available to satisfy the 'no-sequel-nonsense' guys.
Summer in Hollywood 2017
Two weeks earlier, 'Fate of the furious' broke into the box office and shattered all the worldwide collection records. That was supposedly late spring but seems like summer is upon us quite early.
After a hiatus, on May 5th, Hollywood is gearing up to welcome the summer officially, with a biggie like 'Guardians of the Galaxy, volume 2'. The first one was a surprise blockbuster about a group of misfits saving the Galaxy from Thanos' minions. The characters were from the Marvel's world of lesser knowns and they still made an impact. It grossed over 700m worldwide and made huge bucks even in the USA. The early reception for the sequel has been quite good and it would seem like a miss if you don't catch it in the theatres.

'Guardians' has got to make all of it's money during its early days, because it will face stiff competition in the upcoming weeks. May 12th will see the release of Guy Ritchie's 'King Arthur' and the mother-daughter comedy starring Amy Schumer, 'Snatched'. Though both the films will be more genre specific and 'Guardians' still got their family audiences and fans, if either makes a good impression on the audience, it could take a good chunk out of 'Guardians' box office.

The next week will make it tougher with the release of the 'Alien'/'Prometheus' sequel/prequel. Again, this movie also will appeal to genre and 'Alien' fans, unlike me, but it does have quite a few followers. For me, every Alien movie since the first one looked the same and felt the same. I wouldn't recognize one from the other, so will give it a miss. At this point, it will be a miracle though if 'Guardians' could retain its top position. If it does, then be ready to see it go down the week after where the first week of the two newcomers will destroy anything in its path.

May 26th brings you a worldwide sensational franchise and an equally loved TV series reincarnation. 'Baywatch', the adaptation of the beloved TV series of the same name will release a day before its competition to avoid losing some of its dollars. 'Baywatch' has already garnered some goodwill and it's got the universally loved Dwayne Johnson, and an International star, Priyanka Chopra, who will be pitted against one another. The trailers have shown that the movie is going to be a fun ride and while Zac Efron adds to the comedy, there are others who would add to its glamour.

But, there is one problem for this movie, and that is the 'Pirates' sequel. After a break of almost 5 years, the 'Pirates' franchise is getting a sequel as its predecessor made over a billion bucks even though it was critically trashed. The sequel would love to restore some of the faith that the fans had in this franchise, and surprisingly we still crave for more 'Pirates' fun even after losing all hope with the last one. The 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men tell no Tales' will bring back the old trio as well as establishing a new trio which will have only the Sparrow in common. Early screenings have been positive, and we all hope this movie redeems the franchise.
