Your new venture will need structure and systems that help it run smoothly and as stress free as possible.  Taking the time to set this up in the very beginning can prevent chaos, overwhelm, and other challenges in the future.  When your business is supported by a clear and solid structure, you will have more time and energy to focus on priorites that will lead to success.

This list will help you get started:

  • Choose a business name and get a business card, even if a temporary one
  • Choose a legal entity (corporation, sole proprietor)
  • File a DBA (doing business as) if your business name is different than your name
  • Get a business license
  • Set up a separate bank account
  • Choose payment options (check, credit card processing, Paypal)
  • Select your business phone line and create an email account
  • Choose and set up your accounting system
  • Create a secure client record system for notes and credit card numbers
  • Create a fee structure and billing strategies (invoices, prepay, monthly, packages)
  • Set up rules and guidelines that honor both you and your clients
  • Interview professionals for your team (accountant, attorney, coach, etc.)
  • Create a work environment that will support you
  • Design your ideal day, week, month, and set up your schedule/calendar
  • Put in place any reminder or support systems that will help you stay on track
  • Create any contracts or client welcome packets you will need to get started
