Style Tips: Multiple Ear Piercings

By Saturnsatori
According to my Stats Page, people often arrive to Saturn Satori by searching for terms like “multiple ear piercings”, “cute ear piercings” and “ear piercing inspiration”. Once a staple associated mostly with sub cultural and alternative aesthetics, nowadays unusual ear piercings have gained popularity and have found their way into mainstream fashion, just like body modifications in general – once considered bold, rebellious and marginal, now they are progressively becoming socially acceptable. Interesting arranges of ear piercings are one of the things that catch my eye about somebody’s personal style. Being someone who prefers their style inspiration a bit more on the edgy, unrestricted and punk/goth side, browsing through the beautiful street snaps of Tokyo Fashion is one of my favorite ways to discover great styling ideas and unique fashion tips. There, one can feast one’s eyes by admiring the many ways in which people express their creativity and individuality.   Here are some of my favorite looks (all pictures from TokyoFashion.com):

Style Tips: Multiple Ear Piercings

Elegant, carefully arranged and stylish multiple ear piercing.

This is one of the best combinations of both piercing placement and accessories that I have found so far.  I really like how the three pieces of jewelry on the top of the ear are perfectly aligned and in the same angle; also, the combination of large, thin hoop rings with smaller studs gives the style a very elegant and well balanced look. And those rings! Some people just have the coolest style...

Goth/Punk multiple ear piercings.

I like the combination of silver and black jewelry on this one, as well as de dangling detail on one of the rings. Once more, bigger pieces are combined with smaller and more delicate studs to create to create a more harmonious effect.

Bold and bright ear piercing jewelry.

An arrangement of eye-catching, heavy pieces of jewelry with hints of color is accentuated by the short hairstyle pulled back with a bandana. All the attention goes to the ears…

Subtle eccentricity: multiple ear piercings.

For those that prefer slightly less flashy styles, an assortment of round, simple studs coordinated with their outfit colors gives an interesting edge to a more sober look.

Feminine, fashionable and cute multiple ear piercing.

An assortment of cute, girly ear piercing jewelry perfectly complements the candy colored hair of this girl. Not a big fan of using safety pins as earrings, but this one somehow works in the context.

Multiple ear piercing: creating a unique look with ordinary elements.

This is a great example of how plain and simple piercing jewelry pieces can be combined in unique and creative ways. Neat, elegant and stylish, love it!

Statement pieces and creative combinations.

My favorite detail on this one is the alternating ball studs and black thick hoops, like a descending ladder culminating in a big, dangling statement earring.

Creative edge with multiple ear piercings.

I like the creative use of jewelry here. A piece originally meant for the tongue is used as decoration for the top helix piercing, creating an effect that somehow resembles an industrial piercing. A good haircut that emphasizes the ears is the ideal way to flaunt beautifully adorned multiple piercings.
*** Despite how much I admired the look of multiple ear piercings and craved to design my own individual creation, I was constantly putting off getting my ears pierced due to the long, tedious and painful healing times that one needs to go through before being able to feel comfortable with them and customize the jewelry. I am one of those unlucky individuals that just have a hard time with healing piercings.
However, this year I decided to do it anyway, and I am so glad I did! I got three new ones –in addition to my previous three lobe piercings and right tragus piercing–, two on my helix and a conch piercing. Funnily enough, now that I am just one piercing away from my initial goal, I am starting to consider getting at least a couple more additional ones. It is addictive!
Finally, as a result of my personal experience with ear piercings and a good deal of research done in order to get my piercings healed successfully (so far all of them are neat with no scarring), I have some advice to share for those who decide to embark on the adventure of achieving the multiple ear piercing look:

+ Tips for Healthy, Happy and Beautiful Pierced Ears +

1) Do your research and get your piercings done by a good, reputable piercer. This is the foundation of it all. I know that it is very tempting to go to the cheap side because “it’s just an ear piercing”, but I can tell you, it really makes a difference in the quality of the result as well as the healing times! A job done by a professional will be perfectly placed and aligned, and skillfully done so your ear gets minimal distress during the procedure, which helps to minimize the healing time required.
2) If you can, get a couple of the piercings done at once (on the same side, of course, so you can still rest your head on one side without aching!). I used to get them one by one, until I realized that it would be much more effective to take care of two piercings at once (an extra minute on the cleansing routine that you have to perform anyway) and most likely they would be healed around the same time.
3) Get the right initial jewelry. While it might not be the coolest and most eye-catching, it is important to choose the right pieces that suit your piercing. As a general rule, the more surface your earring has, the more likely it will be to carry dirt and bacteria into your freshly made piercing or irritate it by moving around. Therefore, many piercers will recommend starting with small pieces, and using studs instead of hoops for a faster and cleaner healing process.
4) Invest in high quality pieces of jewelry. Surgical steel is usually fine, but if you can, get the ones made of metals like niobium or titanium, since they are hypoallergenic, more durable and will not hurt your ears. Stay away from cheap earrings, as they can stall and even revert your healing progress!
5) Do not slack off on the daily care. I know I sometimes do, but being consistent with your twice-a-day sea salt soaks is all the difference between a hassle-free, few weeks long healing process and getting caught into one of those nightmarish never ending cycles of irritation, soreness and even infections that could lead to unwanted scarring and permanent bumps.
6) Never touch it or remove little crusts with your fingers! Don’t you EVER touch the earrings with unwashed hands either. Ideally, the only thing that should touch your piercing and earring during the cleaning routine is a clean, single-use cotton swab or gauze soaked in sea salt water; however, if you must touch it with your hands, do it only after washing your hands thoroughly – I’m extra paranoid and also disinfect them with antibacterial gel after washing.
7) Do not use disinfectant, alcohol, or any other irritants on it. If your piercing looks less than happy or you see any bumps starting to appear, just stick to the sea salt soaks without over cleaning, don’t touch it at all and see if it improves in a few days. If not, go and pay a visit to your piercer to get it checked.
8) Wash your hair frequently, or style it to keep it away from your freshly made piercing, as it can carry dirt and oil into it. Avoid wearing headphones, earphones headbands or any other sort of accessories that could irritate, hurt or get caught in your earrings.
9) Be patient. You should not change your initial jewelry for a new piece until your piercing is fully healed (i.e. not sore, without any sort of discharge or crust forming around it, the hole must look smooth all around and the jewelry should be able to move freely without any discomfort), or be ready to bear the consequences!  Happy Piercing!
