Style Thief – Five 80′s Styles You Can Work Into Your 2014 Wardrobe

By Mahnoor Malik @MahnoorMalik90

We’ve all heard the phrase “history repeats itself.” The same goes for fashion. It is inevitable for each generation to repeat yesteryear’s fashion trends. Everything seems to come back in 30 years, in an updated version of course. The 80s had its share of the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly. But if you’re looking to borrow a few good looks from this era and incorporate them into a 21st century wardrobe, here are a few essentials you’ll need.

Leggings

Legging have made a comeback, and thank goodness they left the stirrups behind. Leggings are great because they’re comfortable and flattering. They are great when paired with mini skirts, boots, flats, sweaters, or short length women dresses. Some people are wearing them under shorts. This is probably something that should be left to younger people though. It’s also recommended that you do not substitute them for pants.

Over-sized Shirts

If you want to break free of the tight-fitting, uncomfortable tops that are popular today, go big and comfy instead. What goes better with leggings than an over-sized shirt? You can also pair them up with a pair of skinny jeans for a flattering fit. For colder months, you can pair leggings with over-sized sweatshirts, which were also a huge hit during the 80′s.

Neon

Everything that was cool in the 80s was even cooler when you could see it from a mile away. Neon colors were all the rage. Neon is back, and you’ll see it incorporated into all types of accessories and fashions.  If you just can’t bring yourself to go full highlighter, pair your neon with a dark cardigan. You can also accent your regular wardrobe with neon jewelry like a bangle or earrings. If you’re brave and want to achieve the full 80s look, you can incorporate neon fanny packs or neon glasses into your everyday wardrobe. This pop of color will definitely reflect the era and grab the attention of everyone who sees you.

Shoulder Pads

Oh yes. They are back. The trend that had women everywhere looking like linebackers. Thankfully fashion designers have found a way to make shoulder pads more flattering than before. New shoulder pads are much more thinner and less obvious. When choosing a piece with shoulder pads, just make sure to take a look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are a woman, not a professional football player.

Canvas Shoes

Remember a time when girls everywhere were wearing classic canvas Keds and Vans were a big thing? Welcome them back. Today, canvas shoes are coming back in a wide variety of colors and styles. The most commonly worn canvas sneaker of today are Toms. They are comfortable and stylish, but the best thing about them is that when you buy a pair, the company gives a pair away to someone who really needs it, so you look awesome and feel awesome. Back in the days of Ridgemont High, Jeff Spicoli made slip on checkered Vans a forerunner in footwear. Vans have made a comeback featuring new colors and patterns on their shoes. How rad!

If you’re looking for inspiration, look through your parent’s old clothes or check at thrift stores for good ideas on how to incorporate the best styles of the 80′s into your modern wardrobe. If you need more inspiration, you can watch “Pretty in Pink” or “16 Candles” to take a lesson or two from Miss Molly Ringwald on how to truly embrace the 80′s. Just remember, not all trends from the 80′s were flattering, so teasing your bangs and wearing neon all day every day is probably a bit over-kill. When it comes to stealing styles from other eras, subtlety is key.
