Strong Enough by Sheryl Crow.

I always liked the music to this song when I was a kid. I obviously didn’t understand the song until much later but I knew it was sad. I think it’s one of those tracks that you understand more as you get older. Maybe I don’t even fully understand it now, or maybe I understand it too well. Anyways, I’ve been thinking about this song a lot recently and today seemed like the perfect day to write about it…

Strong Enough was released as a single in 1994 from Sheryl’s debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club. It went to #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and spent 26 weeks on the chart.

The lyrics describe a relationship where the girl is very emotional, maybe she thinks too much & too deeply. Her boyfriend doesn’t really understand it at times but she desperately wants him to. In the song, she asks the most important question: Are you strong enough to be my man? At the same time, she’d rather him lie to her, saying he is strong enough, rather than leave her. She doesn’t want to be without him.

Complicated.

Above is an acoustic version.
