relax in a spa not in a S.p.a!
One day I was chatting nicely with a friend of mine in front of a cappuccino. My friend is a very busy manager . She is always traveling or going somewhere for work, this is why I did not notice when she said me: " I went to the Spa this Sunday, I relaxed a lot and I wore my new bikini " I drunk a sip of my cappuccino and my brain began to send me some alarm signals . There was something curious ... Ok . She had gone in a S.p.a or better known as società per azioni ( a big company listed in the stock exchange-S.p.a is the acronym) on Sunday: I was not surprised because she works always. The two elements a bit out of places were “the relax and the bikini”. What had she done exactly ? She had gone into a company on a Sunday wearing a bikini and she had relaxed herself? Bizarre !

My dear friends , it was the first time I heard this term with a different meaning from “ a big company listed in stock exchange” . I misunderstood the situation maybe because the thermal structures were not yet as widespread as today ( in some years the spas have appeared everywhere) or because I was young and out of the real world! Anyway Spa comes from the name of the Belgian town known since the past for its thermal waters. It is very used in the common Italian speech. It is also the acronym of salus per acquam, which means that there are benefits due to the properties of the water. Now we have Spas everywhere in Italy and with many formulas ! Today I cannot image my friend in bikini in a big company on a Sunday. At that time I had gone only once to the spa. It was a natural spa in a lost place on the Tuscany hills. There were natural water pools very hot. All the context was so amazing that I cannot forget it ! In addition it was free and kindly offered by the nature. I still prefer those natural pools than the ultra -equipped modern spas but - as you know - de gustibus non est disputandum .Un giorno stavo chiacchierando amabilmente di fronte ad un cappuccino con una mia amica. Questa ragazza è una professionista super impegnata che è sempre in giro per lavoro per questo motivo non ci ho fatto caso quando mi ha detto: “ Domenica sono andata alla Spa , mi sono rilassata tantissimo e ho sfoggiato il mio nuovo costume” Tempo di dare un sorso al mio cappuccino e il mio cervello ha cominciato a mandarmi dei segnali di allarme. C’era qualche cosa di strano… Passi che fosse andata in una Spa o meglio conosciuta come società per azioni di domenica: lavora sempre e quindi non mi stupiva la cosa. Gli elementi che non mi quadravano erano il relax e il costume. Cosa aveva fatto? Era andata in una società di domenica, vestita con il costume e si era rilassata? Alquanto bizzarro!
Amici miei erano i primi tempi che sentivo questo termine con un’accezione diferente da “società per azioni”, forse perché le struttura termali non erano ancora così diffuse come oggi o perchè ero così giovane e fuori dal mondo reale! Spa deriva dal nome della cittadina Belga nota dall’antichità per la sue acque termali ma vuol anche dire salus per acquam che vuol dire che ci sono benefici grazie alle proprietà dell’acqua. Adesso in Italia ne trovate ovunque e con tantissime formule! Oggi non penserei più che la mia amica fosse andata in bikini una domenica in una società per azioni. A quell’epoca l’unica volta che ero andata alle terme era in pozze calde nell’entroterra toscano, in un paesaggio così magico che non posso dimenticarlo! Tra parentesi gratis e gentilmente offerto dalla natura. Detto fra noi io preferisco ancora quelle pozze a stabilimenti ultra attrezzati ma come si dice? De gustibus non disputandum est.
