Stop Me If You Think That You’ve Heard This One Before…

With the alleged Glastonbury line-up sending rumours of a reunion flying around even more ferociously than usual, it’s hardly surprising that the ex-members of The Smiths are getting hugely frustrated that their denial is falling on deaf, hopeful ears.

Not least exasperated is Morrissey who has admitted to feeling ‘exhausted’, stating that

The solo years have been more meaningful to the audiences than the Smiths years, but the press in England only write about me in relation to the Smiths era. This exhausts me. I wish the press were more willing to chronicle these recent tours and the most recent albums. But they won’t do it. Their needle stuck at ’The Queen is Dead.’ I’ve sold out large venues throughout five continents this year alone – with incredible reactions everywhere. Yet the press will only blather on about Smiths reunion rumors. You can well imagine the frustration. Thank God I have a strong chin.

But how understandable is Morrissey’s frustration? Does he have a right to feel this way? I’m sitting uncharacteristically on the fence. Of course, there’s a big part of me that really wants to see them live. To see them play classic after classic and share the venue and atmosphere with hundreds and thousands of other fans singing along. It would be amazing.

However, with 9 albums as a solo artist, and plenty of sell-out tours all over the world under his belt, Mozza should be enjoying his own success which is being undeniably overshadowed by the incessant gossiping about a reunion. He’s admitted,

…I now accept that the newer songs – which actually aren’t that new anymore – will only ever exist in the YouTube domain. Do I see myself receiving a grown-up recording offer from a label of stature and power? No. I have a better chance of being hit by lightning.

Despite frequent denial from everyone involved, I’m sure the rumours will persist and only time will tell whether there is any truth to them. I just hope that if it does happen, which I would definitely be attending despite my reservations, it is for the right reasons and everyone is on board.
