State of the Tennis Nation: Germany

German tennis has been struggling to live up to the glory days of the 80s and 90s lead by Boris Becker and Michael Stich for some time, but that does not mean they are not a world power.

A top 10 ranking has eluded most of the current German players save for Tommy Haas and despite a good enough game to crack the top 10, Phillip Kohlschreiber has been stuck in the 20s it seems his whole career.

Germans in the top 100:

  • No.25 Phillip Kohlschreiber
  • No.26 Tommy Haas
  • No.62 Florian Mayer
  • No.66 Benjamin Becker
  • No. 77 Tobias Kamke
  • No. 78 Jan Lennard-Struff
  • No. 90 Dustin Brown

Jamaican emigre Dustin Brown adds some flair to the German roster with some exciting serve and volley tennis whose best results will come on grass. But like a few other top players, he’s pushing 30 and running out of time to make a serious impact.

My top pick for the future has to go to Alexander Zverev: He’s gone from a ranking of 808 at the start of 2014 to 141 with a golden run in Hamburg defeating Robin Haase, Mikhail Youzhny, Santiago Giraldo and Tobias Kamke – none of whom are slouches. Kind of reminds me of another 17 year old German player that went on to greatness…
