Spotlight On: Judy Geib Jewelry

By Raymondleejewelers @raymondleejwlrs

The title of Judy Geib’s website perfectly describes her personality and passion for art; “Judy Geib Plus Alpha.” She explains that this is an idiom used among the Japanese which means, “And whatever else might happen.” Judy uses this to describe her work and her business because she wants to keep an open mind about what the future may hold for her artistically.

A self-taught artisan, Geib’s work evolved organically over time from her love of art. After moving to New York in 1980, Geib explored many artistic outlets as she worked her day job in architecture. However, she soon found her art turning more and more toward jewelry. In 2002 Barney’s of New York snatched up her first collection. Barney’s knew a good thing when they saw it and they have exclusively featured Geib’s work ever since.

Geib’s delicate, bohemian styled jewelry draws on a number of inspirations. She cites everything from ocean life to politics as creative fodder for her work. At the heart of every creation though, is a desire to create something that she would want herself combining certain elements of humbleness and extravagance.

One of the things that make Geib’s jewelry really stand out is her commitment to excellent materials in her work. Geib will go to any length to collect exactly the right stones for her pieces. Traveling often to Brazil to purchase her stones at the source is a delight to her. As her business has grown, Geib has seen the need for expanding her production beyond simply what she can produce herself. For this reason in 2008 she began collaborating with jewelry artisan Nikolle Radi. This expansion of talent has allowed Geib to produce pieces she never foresaw.

Some of her loveliest work is no doubt her pieces featuring moonstone and opals of which she buys directly from a close friend and dealer in Australia. The pieces featured in her Ephemera collection bring together a sense of magic and beauty that only Geib can create.
