I stumbled across this song last night when I was watching 80′s music videos on You Tube. Apparently it was one of those “lost hits” because several comments came from people who either forgot about it or hadn’t heard it in years. I didn’t recognize the band but I later realized I do know one of their other songs, “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone),” which was a big hit in the United States reaching #2 on the charts in 1986.
Someday was released off of the same album, The Thin Red Line, in June of 1986. It became a single in 1987 reaching #7 on the Hot 100 and #4 on Adult Contemporary.
Songfacts didn’t have any song information but I think it’s fairly easy to understand. It’s about a girl who has feelings for a guy who doesn’t feel the same way. He doesn’t understand why she still waits for him and when he asks her why, she tries to spare his feelings despite how much he’s hurt her and would probably be unaffected by it. It is also revealed that he has a fear of getting close but maybe one day it will subside. At the end of the song, the situation switches and instead of her waiting for him, he is waiting for her.
Similar to the old phrase…the one that got away…because listeners don’t know if she was still waiting or had finally let him go…
