At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. The beginning was really confusing and I found myself having to reread a lot of parts. It also bothered me how quickly things started. It was like second chapter and already right to the point. There were other parts throughout the book that were confusing because the way they were written was just over complicated and could’ve been simplified.
In this book Regina is kicked out of her circle of ‘friends’ and is therefore not accepted by anyone. She goes from running the school to being below even the freshmen. Through out the story you’ll read about how awful her ex-friends are and the different, sick forms of torture that they use. You will hate Anna. I promise you. And you will also hate Kara. These two used to be Regina’s friends but now are out to make her life miserable. It’s just so wrong I have almost have no words for it. I can’t even imagine being this horrible of a person. Are girls really this mean? I asked myself this over and over again. Because, maybe I’m just not noticing it, but I swear girls are not like this at my school. That was one of the things that made this book feel a little extreme. Another is the fact that the teachers do NOTHING. How do they not notice? And if they do, why don’t they do anything? It seems like every teacher in this book just did not care, and I don’t feel like that’s how it would be at my school. I feel like the teachers at my school notice a lot, and that if they notice something wrong they end it immediately or at least contact your parents immediately. They wouldn’t just stand back and watch, because that’s not their job. Maybe that’s just how I feel. What do you think?
Now, what I LOVED about this book. One word, Michael. Michael is such a sweet, awesome, nice, great person. He owes Regina absolutely nothing but still can’t seem to stay away from her and can’t help but try to save her. Their relationship is so sweet (well..not always) and I loved every part of the book where they became closer. The whole time your thinking ‘be with Michael, be with Michael, be with Michael’. I also really liked Liz. She is and isn’t a big part of the book. History of her plays a big part in the book, and I swear every corner Regina turns she is there, but she isn’t the main focus. Regina and Liz used to be best friends, until Anna ended that. See..don’t you hate Anna already? Anyway, Liz is a strong, brave person who is always giving Regina a reason to carry on. And in the end, she may also save Regina in ways she’d never have guessed.
This is a quote I think sums up Regina’s feelings pretty well: ‘In high school, you don’t get to change. You only get to walk variations of the same lines everyone has already drawn for you.’
There are parts in this book that had me speed reading and my heart racing until the end of chapter, because that’s how anxious I was to find out what would happen next. This is definition of a page turner. It takes so many twists and turns that you won’t see coming.
I recommend this book to girls, teen and adult. It tells a really good story about finding strength and your way in life, and is a real eye opener.
