If you’re one of those optimistic people that sees the silver-lining in every ark rain cloud, then you’ve probably gotten into the habit of describing your teeny-tiny, size-challenged bathroom as cute, quaint, dainty, adorable, charming, pretty and maybe even perky. It’s your way of glossing over the fact it’s cramped at best.
But don’t worry. You’re not alone. Not by a long shot. Not with the popular rise of mini-apartments and sleek studios. It’s the revolution that has come about whether we like it or not. We live in the day and age of small space living and it doesn’t look like it’s going to go anywhere soon. But just because you’re made a compromise on space doesn’t mean you should be sacrificing style – especially when it comes to your bathroom.
This is one of those rooms where aesthetics are absolutely everything. They’re life. You need it to sparkle and shine and feel as chic and clean as you want to be. Of course, the obvious hurdle when it comes to a small bathroom is making your lack of storage space look stylish.
That’s why we’ve gone away and written this blog post. We’ve been speaking to interior designers and bathroom specialists to come up with a collection of handy tricks that will help turn your half-pint-size bathroom into a drop dead gorgeous one.
You. Are. Welcome.
- Lay Down A Wild Rug
One of the worst things about stepping out of the shower, hopping out of the tub or having to pop to the bathroom for a midnight pee is being stung by the freezing cold tiles that almost always come as a bit of a shock. It’s wrong. No one should have to step onto a cold slippery surface after a relaxing cleanse. No one. That’s why you should rush out to your nearest Ikea, home depot store or flea market and pick up a soft, warm and colorful shag pile rug to lay down. You should replace the cold shock with something impossibly soft waiting to catch your foot. It doesn’t matter how small your bathroom may be, there is always space for a chic rug.
- Paint Your Tub
When space is limited, one of the toughest sacrifices you have to make is artwork. Every wall needs to be used for practical and functional reasons as opposed to sheer eye tonic reasons. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but swallow it you must. Or must you? If your bathroom has a distinct lack of canvas space, try painting your bathtub. Yeah. The actual tub. Whether it be a clawfoot or a not. From the bottom of the claws to the transition into enamel, paint it some fun, funky and lively color. It will totally transform your bathroom. It will be the one thing that makes you smile no matter how cramped life in there might be.
- Wall Of Mirrors
Using mirrors to increase the sense of space is nothing new. It’s one of those interior design tricks that has been doing the rounds since light first got reflected and people started caring about their appearance (read: forever). But having a mirror is not enough in a small bathroom. Instead, you need to have a mirror that covers an entire wall and then frame the edges for that extra dollop of chic. This won’t just make your space that much more stylish, it will also make your bathroom a thousand times more practical. There will be no more sink sharing rushes each morning, no more play fighting when you and your partner are both trying to prettify yourselves before a night out and no more bathroom battles setting off your morning grumpiness. All that is solved by just getting a massive mirror. So simple. Of course, you don’t have to just opt for one giant mirror. You could fill one wall with lots of framed mirrors and get the same result, just with a little more quirkiness.
- Surfaces Should Be Chic
Despite all the clutter that may be clogging up your bathroom shelves or the space behind your vanity mirror, bathrooms are one of those rare rooms where the surfaces count for a lot in the style stakes. They are forever on show. They dazzle and dance unlike here, which makes them completely different to other rooms. If you want out advice, head to WorldStoneGroup.com and see just how dazzling a granite top can look and then think about decorating your vanity unit in the same way, complete with gold accents here and there. It could be the frame around your mirrors, the cup that holds your toothbrushes or the handles on your drawers. A little splash of gold or granite goes a long, long way in a small bathroom.
- Pick the Perfect Palette
Having a chic and relaxing color scheme is so important when you have a pint-size bathroom. You want it to be made up of colors that soothe your mind and help you slip into that usually elusive state of total chillaxation. The color scheme that is floating our rubber duck at the moment is a mix of sage green, whites and slate tiles. They work so, so well together, almost as if they were made to be shaken in the cocktail mixer that is a tiny bathroom. They soothe without once touching on the realm of boring.
- Let’s Go Au Naturel
Nothing will make your small space feel more luxe, lavish and utterly perfect that a healthy dollop of natural lighting and plenty of plants. It doesn’t matter what you have to play with, find a way to let mother nature in. It could be a skylight or pretty windows that open right up. Whatever the case, try adding to the allure with see-through curtains and plenty of bushy foliage. You could even play on the happy vibe of green colours by painting your bathtub green too, and then dot lots of potted houseplants about your floor. Mmmm. That’s how to do simple chic.
