This pasta recipe uses whole grain pasta. From the picture, I can't tell the difference between this whole grain penne and the typical penne. They look, and almost taste the same to me. The whole grain version has a bit denser texture and an earthier flavor that I prefer. Although, I sure die-hard pasta eaters might disagree with me.
Why would you choose a whole grain pasta over your favorite brand of noodles? If you're watching your weight and nutrition, whole grains add additional fiber - they haven't had the bran and germ removed when they are milled.
and Mayo Clinic recommend choosing whole grains whenever possible, and now that the stores stock a variety to choose from, you might want to give them a try. I'll bet you find a brand you'll enjoy.
Choose a light sauce, add a little protein like this tender, pink shrimp, and you'll be surprised at the finished product. You'll have a satisfying pasta dish your family will love.
Happy cooking!
