Size Zero - An unhealthy trend

The hype behind the size zero never ends. Size Zero never existed in the world, until a few years back. The vital statistics of a person having size zero should be 31-23-32, which is claimed to be the ideal statistic of a woman. For people who follow a healthy diet and routine, it is practically not possible, unless you have been gifted with such a figure by birth.

Celebrities all around the world started adopting or striving to achieve a skinny look. Hollywood stars or models are seen flaunting their skinny protruding collar bones, slim waists and legs and this in turn is forming the wrong impression on impressionable young women and teenagers.

What is more disturbing is the fact that, not only is size zero a trend, but the new fad is triple-size zero. Social media is encouraging this unhealthy trend and is creating an unhealthy obsession of extreme slimness among women. Such an impact has this dangerous obsession made on the minds of women that they now judge people based on their weight.

All people can talk about these days are weight loss, diets and size zero. Most designers don’t stock dresses above size 10. Does that mean women bearing a size above 10 should not exist?

Why is size zero being hyped?

  • Hollywood stars – Creating the trend, young women today worship them and ape their every move.
  • Fashion industry – Fashion is often flaunted by super skinny models. All women want to loose weight and when they see smaller sizes appearing in the market, every young girl wants to fit into these tiny sizes.
  • Sex – Baring flesh is considered sexy and to bare it all, we have it in our minds that we have to be super skinny.

How to get to being a Size Zero:

  • Starve
  • Surgery
  • Dieting
  • Exercise

To attain the size zero figure, young girls often fall the victim of eating disorder and often fall the victim of:

  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Osteoporosis
  • Increased Illness
  • Organ Failure

In reality,23-inch waists are sported by 6-8 year old children. Why do we need to encourage women to get the waist of a 6year old?

This size zero trend needs to stop. The right way to loose weight is to exercise and eat a well balanced diet. Whether we know it or not, viewing skinny women in the media is permeating our thoughts and making us think that skinny bodies are worth more and are valued more in society.

We all need to work together to kick out this unhealthy trend. Let’s start respecting women as such, irrespective of their sizes.

Let’s celebrate womanhood and the variety of shapes and sizes we come in. Let’s keep the zero’s to write on our cheques.
