Six on Saturday 3-10-2020

Weather chat again! We’ve had torrential rain here in Hampshire, yesterday, overnight and this morning. A visit to my allotment was top of the list today because it is prone to flooding and the shed roof leaks. My Six on Saturday are my allotment.

1. Allotment Plot 52A

Six on Saturday 3-10-2020

I inherited this ‘quaint’ shed from the previous allotment holder, it is made up of bits and pieces from a variety of old sheds. You will also see the roof has a strange assortment of coverings. The plot number was painted on a slate was also inherited and as it had faded over the years I repainted it recently with acrylic paint and sprayed it with Plastikote. I planted a small Montana clematis which has really taken off and the leaves have turned a fabulous color.

2. Oh dear, the roof leaks!

Six on Saturday 3-10-2020

Whilst the plot was fortunately not flooded, the roof of the shed leaked badly. I was aware that the dodgy tarpaulin cover for the roof was a bit dodgy, but clearly it is getting worse and needs a proper felt roof. The pink trug was half full of water and I almost spilt it getting it off the shelf – I wouldn’t have been too happy if it had emptied itself over the shed floor.

3. Jobs done this week

Top picture: I discovered a great independent nursery this week and they were selling trays of Dwarf Green Curled Kale at £1.80 for 10 plants. So I guessed as they were selling it now, it was ok to plant out.

Bottom picture: I found in another local nursery rhubarb plants. I bought ‘Champagne’ and ‘Victoria’ to replace the old rhubarb plant that died this summer.

4. The cold frame

I have a cheap plastic cold frame but it serves its purpose. In there, from left to right, there are red onion sets started off in cells, leeks and broad beans. Next week I’m going to start off some peas.

5. Dahlias

The dahlia bed is still going strong and bringing lots of color to the allotment. Pooh Swan Island is flowering it’s socks off and a fabulous red and yellow. I’m really pleased with the Diablo plants I bought early summer to fill in the gaps.

6. The allotment garden

In my last Six on Saturday I included a couple of pics of my allotment garden and the photo above is from a better angle to show off the full garden. The roses where dashed by the rain but they are full of buds so hopefully will flower again.

As always, a big thank you to The Propagator for hosting Six on Saturday please visit his blog and peep over the fence to see what is going on in his and other contributors gardens.
