Any contractor who repairs, renovates or remodels homes and residential properties totes some weird and mysterious implements in their little bag of tricks.

For electricians, it’s fish tape. Stonemasons have tuck pointers. And what self-respecting roofer would show up onsite sans his trusty kettle skimmer?  Even for small jobs, carpenters, plumbers, pool builders and other specialists pack in a gaggle of gadgets that most of us have never heard of.

But the one tool used by thriving craftsmen of every ilk? Marketing signage, of course.

The Cost Effective Way to Connect

As business owners, contractors know that signage is an integral part of a winning marketing and brand-building strategy. High-quality, intelligently conceived signage helps create awareness, generate leads, grow sales and educate the public about unique capabilities or services.

So what would the ideal set of signs look like for today’s busy contractor? Probably some combination of these cost-effective options:

For Your Jobsites

  • Branded yard sign – think of it as a small but effective billboard that sells your business all day long; yard signs work well for real estate agents and can do the same for you, especially for larger projects, where you’re onsite for more than a week or two.
  • On-premise signage — if what you’re doing is messy, noisy or potentially dangerous,  consider placing small (branded) signs, tent cards or placards in or around the premises to alert homeowners and occupants.
  • Logoed banner — not for every contractor or project but still an effective branding tool for your branding bag when larger jobs come your way; do what your commercial counterparts do and hang it on a gate or fence; caveat: in the spirit of courtesy and professionalism, always obtain customers’ permission before displaying promotional signage on their property.

For Your Fleet

  • Vehicle wrap — versatile, colorful and eye-catching, wraps offer the lowest cost-per-impression of any form of advertising, with the potential to generate up to 70,000 daily impressions per vehicle.
  • Magnetic truck sign — easy on, easy off, and easy on the budget, magnetic signs deliver many of the same benefits as vehicle wraps for a fraction of the cost.
  • Decals or stickers — for branding or ownership identification, affix your name and logo to tools, toolboxes, storage containers or company equipment.

For Your Customers

  • Fridge magnets – magnets keep your company top of mind and make it easy for customers to reach you; include your logo, URL and toll-free number, maybe even a bulleted list of services.
  • Leave-behinds – OK, business cards, flyers and brochures aren’t technically signage BUT they are important for educating and staying connected with customers. And how about this idea? Take a few minutes to meet and greet your customer’s neighbors. Hand them a marketing piece and offer a discount on your services.
Include a smartphone scannable QR code that instantly whisks them to your website or special-offer landing page.
