SHADOWMAN: END TIMES #2 Review

Posted on the 27 May 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

The story so far:

Jack Boniface never knew his father. But the orphan was possessed by the same wicked loa—an exile
from the voodoo pantheon—that has bonded with generations of his ancestors. Jack inherited his
father’s legacy of the night…and became the Shadowman, protecting the earthly plane from the evils of
Master Darque and the Deadside.

Although the loa grants its hosts tremendous power for good, it charges an evil price, and corrupts
a man’s soul. With a Boniface under its control, the loa kills other exiled voodoo mysteries, like the
child-stealer Makoot, hoping to earn its way back into the pantheon. Even Josiah, perhaps the finest
Shadowman of all, began to succumb to the restless spirit before he died.

Virtually no one could help Jack control the loa. Not the Abettors, a magical order sworn to train
and aid the Shadowman, who tried to kill Jack for being dangerously unfit for the job. And not Punk
Mambo, a charismatic voodoo priestess raised in posh UK boarding schools on a steady diet of Sid
Vicious. But Alyssa could. The junior Abettor who helped train Jack fell in love with him, and together
their love calmed Jack’s inner turmoil, and allowed him to tame the loa…until the loa played its trump
card. To break Jack’s will and take over his body once and for all, the loa revealed that Jack’s father
never died. Josiah faked his death in battle against Master Darque a generation ago, and abandoned
his wife, pregnant with Jack.

Jack is on a quest to find his father.  The thing he has to do is make a sacrifice.  One that hurts. What he gives up to find his father is a big deal to him but he is doing what needs to be done.  Will all the voodoo and magic in this book, some things aren’t what they appear to be.  When Jack is between worlds, somethings happen at different points but come together.  Once Jack is in the Voodou Lands, his is confronted with a very difficult decision in order to find his father.  Can this man catch a break?

I am starting to understand this series a bit more now. It was a bit confusing at first with all the voodoo and magic.  It was hard to tell what was what.  Jack was cursed with the loa because his father left and went into hiding.  Jack’s emotions are getting the better of him and it is up to him and what he is willing to sacrifice to find his father.  This book goes a bit more into what happened to Jack’s father.  Jack gets to speak to him but not face to face. More like face to stack of cars with a skull.  With only one book left, I imagine a big conclusion.  It’s a short series but hopefully it’s all worth it in the end and I didn’t “sacrifice” too much time.
