Is it just me or does the chicken look a little nervous?
You know how it is. Life gets busy.
For my family, in spring, that busy-ness involves a whole bunch of wrapping up the homeschool year, planting the garden, and entering the final stages of getting things ready for the summer time community events we are involved in.
I’m still working on my book. I’m drawing ever nearer my self-imposed deadline to call it “done enough” and start sending it to publishers. Six of nine chapters are tidied up and ready to go, but those last three are looming. No matter how early I get up in the morning it just never seems like there’s enough time to get through as many pages as I’d hoped for that day. Still, it’s progressing so I’ll call any forward momentum success.
My “day job” is at a United Methodist Church. John Wesley, founder of United Methodism, believed that engaging in pretty much any leisure activity was an unwise use of time. He didn’t exactly say it was a “sin” (I don’t think), but he was big on the whole idea of there being lots to do and less time to do it. I’m pretty sure that’s why the church conference chooses this insanely busy time of year to hold the big Annual Conference. They just want to make sure that none of us are wasting a SINGLE moment of any given day. The conference is actually a time I am really looking forward to, but still… the corn isn’t going to plant itself.
Random trivia… Last year I witnessed my first ordination and commissioning ceremony. One of the vows has to do with pastors promising to always be prompt and punctual and never be in debt. That was the moment I knew I’d never be a United Methodist pastor.
This year we decided to add moving to a new house and stocking it with chickens and bunnies into the schedule, just for grins and giggles.
At any rate, I tell you all that to say that I sat down to write this post and realized that I had nothing terribly insightful or witty to share. My brain just feels slightly soggy and sun-fried. So I thought maybe, instead of being my usual stunningly deep and profound self (haha!) I would just show you a little bit of what we’ve been up to.
Of course, I already shared about the new house. It’s in beautiful condition, as 140 year old farm houses go, but we wanted to personalize it a little so we decided to paint the bedrooms before we move in. It’s still a work in progress and we’re back and forth between the two houses but we’re getting there.
Handsome Hippie Hubby and I decided to change our bedroom from all green to brown and cream.
- before
- after – still needs the cream trim
Sweet Hippie Daughter chose a very pretty pale pink with black trim for her “rock star” themed room.

We’ve added 7 new family members as well. There are six chicks: Harriet, Freckles, Washington Beaks, Mrs. MacGuillicutty, Peanut and Butterscotch.
- Day one – I’m not sure which babies were more curious about what was happening, the avians or the humans!
- Toddler-saurus Rex needed to know why it was NOT OK to pick the chicks up by their heads!
- Mrs. MacGuillicutty loves being held more than any of the others.
- I’m amazed how much she’s grown in just a few weeks!
- Sweet Hippie Daughter was so excited to help move the chicks into their big girl coop!
- The chicks were just happy to know that the food dish moved with them.
We also welcomed Harry Bunny into the family. (I don’t come up with the names around here, I swear!) The original intent was to breed Harry and have meat rabbits but we’re all a bunch of big softies and, while we’ve eaten rabbit before, we’re just not sure we have the heart to eat our rabbits. We may end up vegetarians before it’s all over, just because we can’t bear to kill anything.
- She never stopped grinning the whole way home, after we picked him up.
- Just about more cuteness than a person can stand! And if you’re wondering… no… he doesn’t always run free in the house, but we do take him out to give him some love now and then.
The new animals are all happily installed over at the new place. Now we just need to get ourselves over there!
Of course we’ll have Doofy Dog and the Tank O’ Crabs with us, too.
- I love this giant hairball! (Please pardon the giant stacks of boxes and random stuff, looking for a home. We are living in a half-boxed world right now!)
So that’s life these days at the Hippie Homestead. Thanks for sticking with me while I scramble to catch up. I promise… soon I’ll get my feet under me again and I’ll be back to my usual incredibly profound self (hehehe! I’m cracking myself up with that!).
Tell me what’s keeping you busy these days? I love hearing about everyone else’s adventures!
