SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a discipline that is changing all the time. With search engine algorithms being tweaked constantly, it makes the SEO game hard to predict. In the last few years, there have been a ton of changes that have lead to some people getting out of the market. Here are a few things that are happening or will happen in SEO in the year 2012.

Increase for Bing

Over the last few years, Google has basically dominated the search engine market. This year, Bing seems poised to take a little bit of the market share away. They have already had an increase within the last year, and they will probably continue to grow for the rest of 2012. Bing has done a lot to improve its search engine in recent years, and it appears to be paying off at least to some degree. Google will still be the dominant name in the search engine industry, but Bing is gaining a bit.

Mobile Search Skyrockets

In 2012, mobile searches have skyrocketed. This is in large part due to how common smartphones are becoming. With so many smart phones, many people are doing more searches on their mobile devices. Mobile advertising spending was up 269 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, and that is only poised to get even higher this year. In the next few months and years, more people will continue to buy smartphones, and then do searches on them. Advertisers will start to pay attention to this and put more money into mobile marketing.

Social Media Changes

Social media has become a big part of the Internet and almost everyone’s life. Because of this, it is in your best interest to adopt some social media marketing practices. In the coming year, search engines are going to start paying more attention to social signals in rankings. If you want your content to rank highly in the search engines, you’re going to need to get some buzz on social media sites.

Many websites make the mistake of putting all kinds of different social media portals on their home pages. This can sometimes dilute the traffic that they get by sending it out to other places. Don’t forget what your primary objective is with your site.

If you want to be able to take advantage of the social media marketing craze, you may want to look at getting involved with Pinterest. Pinterest is a very popular social networking site that more people are spending time on. With Pinterest, you can create virtual pin boards that you can pin images on for others to look at. When you are promoting products or services, you can put pictures up and share them with others.

Video SEO

In today’s market, video is becoming critically important. If you want to be able to reach more people, getting involved with video creation is a good idea. More people use YouTube as a search engine than Bing or Yahoo. It is actually second in traffic to Google. This means that you need to make video a priority if you want to be able to get traffic. Make videos and tailor them to being found by searches.

More Localized Search Results

In 2012, search engines are putting more focus on localized search results. Instead of having to look through results from the Web as a whole, you’ll be presented with local business results. This can help you get more local traffic for your business and for your website.

Keep these trends in mind through the rest of 2012 and into 2013. They have the potential to completely change your search engine optimization efforts.
