Self Isolation Reading Suggestions

Posted on the 23 March 2020 by Booksocial

So if you’re not already it seems the most of us will be pretty much in total self isolation from today onward. But fear not, here are our suggestions of what to read when you are stuck indoors.

The Mirror and the Light – Hilary Mantel

The last in the Thomas Cromwell trilogy was only released a fortnight ago but has been making waves ever since. Not only is it a hardback, at 912 pages it’s not for the faint-hearted but if you’ve read the other two you HAVE to read this one.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

If there ever was a man you would want to be in isolation with, it’s Count Rostov. Who just so happens to be one of my favorite ever literary characters! Placed under house arrest in a hotel in Moscow during the revolution Towles delivers a love letter to Russia that is beautiful to read. Love it.

Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession

Set around two thirty something males who still live at home with parents this book delivers friendship and kindness whilst examining people’s perceptions of loneliness and contentment. You will come out of it wanting to ponder the pitfalls of life over a board game rather than a beer.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

If you think you have it bad, try being on the Guest List to THE showbiz wedding of the year. It’s to die for! The Guest List from Hunting Party author Foley, is the type of book where you look up and realize you have suddenly read 60 pages without stopping. We loved it when we read it last month and think you will too.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy

If you need something to quieten your anxious mind this beautifully illustrated book by Mackesy is the perfect tonic. It often only has a sentence or two per page yet it is filled with quotes you will want to frame, hang on your wall, even have tattooed. Everyone home should have a copy. Despite the fact that I can never remember the full title!

Riders by Jilly Cooper

No one beats Jilly Cooper for pure escapism and in amongst all this craziness sometimes we just need to read about women with too much red lippy, quaffing champagne and bonking anything in jodhpurs. Nuff said.
