If you are ever planning a trip to Dusseldorf, be sure to take the time to visit Schweine Janes in the city centre. It is conveniently located in the old part of town on one of the main strips. Here you can sit on the sidewalk and enjoy your food with a cold beer and watch the people going by. But be warned, you need to get there early or be prepared to stand in line for one of the delicious pork dishes they serve. We seriously got there midmorning for our lunchtime meal, as we were on a tight schedule and did not have the time to wait.
Not being able to speak German, but knowing that I wanted a serving of the juicy pork roast cut directly off the rotating spit, on one of their soft house made breads, I tried to explain to them what I wanted. After lots of pointing and gesturing on my behalf, and lots of nodding on their side, I assumed that they knew exactly what I was talking about, and we sat down to wait for our eagerly anticipated meal. I nearly fell off my seat when our food arrived, no pork bun for us, but the biggest plate of their famous “schweinehaxe” , which is roast pork knuckle, with a side serving of roast potatoes – This was not just a little serving of pork, no, this seemed to be half a pig, which at 10am, I was not sure I could cope with, even though it looking absolutely delicious. The staff were fantastic, and once one of the patrons, who spoke a little English, explained that it was in fact the “schweine brotchen” – (pork on a chewy German Roll) that we ordered, they happily took it back and within seconds slapped down an equally large plate of succulent pork , piled high, on an equally delicious roll.
The menu includes “leberkase” (pork meat loaf), “schweinehaxe”(pork knuckle) or “currywurst (curried pork sausage), “schweine brotchen” (pork on a roll) and saurekraut, and much more . Treat your tastebuds to something special when next in Dusseldorf.
