My daughter was born in July so would be one of the youngest in her class, just before her third birthday we went to an open evening at the school we had applied for. School said they would support me with potty training as she wasn’t quite there yet.

We had tried potty training before on and off since she was two years old.

She wasn’t interested. She wasn’t ready.

I didn’t feel very comfortable sending my daughter to school anyway; I thought she was way too young. I also didn’t think they’d help with potty training so it was a weight off my mind when they said they would.

I hoped that over the summer holidays we would be able to crack it and she could start school in September fully potty trained like the other boys and girls.

This wasn’t the case.

We tried and tried to get her to use the potty but she just screamed.

We tried a childs seat on the toilet but she would just hold it in until she had her knickers back on.

Naughty or scared?

Either way she wouldn’t go.

Then about two weeks before she started school she started using her seat on the toilet.

Fantastic I thought. Maybe we wouldn’t need school to help us with potty training after all.

The first day of term arrived and although a lot better than she was she wasn’t fully potty trained but seeing as school said they would support me with potty training I got her ready and I took her to school.

The first day she had a few accidents and came home in a nappy in the end (I packed a few in her bag just to be on the safe side).

I put it down to nerves and said nothing about it.

After all school said they would support me with potty training and I believed them.

A few weeks passed and she was doing fabulous at home. Using the toilet in the day fine. Only wearing a nappy at night.

School however was another story.

Many a day she came home in a nappy (I was still sending a few in a bag just encase). They seemed so lazy. She wasn’t having accidents like this at home or even when out. Just at school.

I struggled on against my worries, thinking I was over reacting and Bella was just adjusting.

One day after a separate incident involving the clear incompetence of the teaching staff I had enough; it was about a month into the first term. She was dry at home with no accidents but still having them at school.

This wasn’t the only problem we were having with them either.

At the end of the school day I grabbed hold of my daughters hand and marched out of the classroom, round the building to the reception. I told the receptionist that under no uncertain terms would my daughter be returning here ever again.

The school said they would support me with potty training and they did not.

They were lazy.

She clearly wasn’t allowed to go to the toilet enough despite being told all she had to do was ask.

She was fine at home. She was fine when out.

The school did not help! If they were unable to support me then they should have said so and we would have found somewhere that could.

Is it my fault for not having her fully potty trained and ready for school?

Or school the school have never said they would help me?
