Let's start with the obvious — it is worth taking your kids to see it? YES. However there are a few things to consider before loading up the car and heading to the theater.
Things to consider
If you are going to take your kids to see the film, bear in mind it is very loud (even for me!), it is 3D and there are some scenes which are a bit scary. Nothing major, but especially with the effects being "in your face" kids can be startled easily.
Age range
I would say this is good for 4 - 4 1/2 year olds and up. Just a year ago we went to see Finding Nemo in 3D and he wouldn't sit still, the glasses bothered him and he lost interest. I don't want you to spend your money and not have you and the kids enjoy the movie! There were younger kids who were crying, tired and were not focused or enjoying the film.
What it's about
The movie is set 10 years before Monsters, Inc. and shows how Mike Wazowski and Sully's friendship began. Obviously the story line is hard for the younger ones to follow — they don't know what University is and can't differentiate the characters in their younger days versus present time. But when I asked Little M what it was about and he said "A monster wanted to be scary, but he couldn't." So he got the gist of it, remembered specific funny scenes and could describe each character and what they looked like.
The animation is incredible and the Monsters just look so real — and their personalities and features had such human qualities which made it all the more funny. I personally liked that they didn't have all of those adult humored inside jokes, they kept it kid friendly and had a wonderful message of team work, confidence in your own self and finding your way even if things don't turn out how you planned them.

Parents will recognizes the voices — the cast could't be more all-star with Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Helen Mirren, Steve Buccemi, John Kransinski and a SNL favorite Julia Sweeny.
