Scapolo and Zittella , No Thanks : Today the Word Single is Better in Italian Language!

When my parents were young , there were two terms that created terror “scapolo ( bachelor) and zittella (old maid) “. They were people not married .  The scapolo was the concern of  his mother : her son not married - what he would do once disappearance Mom? At that age the typical Italian man  was a worker  without any independence in the housework . So he was completely  conditioned to his mother or his wife for many things. This is why a scapolo was a concern for the moms! Alberto Sordi,  a very famous Italian actor , was a scapolo par excellence anyway he didn’t  seem so  desperate! Then there were the zittelle , a so sad and disparaging word ! Yes, because the zittelle were seen as  acidic and alone women, with a very bad disposition  and almost destined to live an isolated life . A concern for moms ! “What will happen to my poor daughter if she does not find a husband? “
Over the years  these two “terrible”  words for every mom  have been practically disappeared from the common language and they were replaced with the English word “single”.  Luckily the singles ( male or female ) have nothing to do with the scapolo and the zittella . Sure ! The single today has a small but very modern house , he / she lives alone and he / she has a very active social life-  happy hours, gym , holidays with friends . He /she  is always to some concerts or in some exhibitions and events .

My  friends  single ? As far as concerning the “female part of the group”, they are interesting and dynamic , always around  the world...very far from the definition of “zitelle”!  The same for the “male part of the group”. Very far from the idea that our parents had about not married people! So stop using these old terms “scapolo and zittella”! Better the word “singles”. One day talking to a person, he said to me with inviting eyes that he was” free” ( he had used the English word). It was the first time I have heard this word with this meaning  and  I have immediately thought about  a service rather than a person... anyway the singles are a new large group . Marriage, love and all the similar situations  are very beautiful things  but when I find myself in front of a huge mountain  of dirty dishes  because my “ sweetheart” has  invited his large family  to eat ... well the singles have  all my envy!
Quando erano giovani i miei genitori c’erano due termini che creavano terrore: scapolo e zittella. Erano quelle persone non sposate. Lo scapolo era poi la preoccupazione delle mamme: cosa avrebbe fatto il loro figliolo una volta scomparsa la mamma? Al tempo l’immagine dell’uomo italiano era  quella di un individuo che si appoggiava alla mamma o alla moglie per mangiare, essere curato etc etc. Quindi che preoccupazione per le mamme pensare il proprio figliolo scapolo! Eppure c’era Alberto Sordi che era definito lo scapolo d’oro per eccellenza e l’aria così disperata non l’aveva. C’erano poi le zittelle, termine così triste e dispregiativo! Sì perché le zittelle erano acide e sole, dal brutto carattere e destinate quasi a vivere una vita isolata. Altre disperazione per le mamme! Cosa farà la mia povera figlia se non troverà un marito? Con il passare degli anni queste due parole così preoccupanti sono praticamente scomparse dal vocabolario e sono state sostituite con il termine inglese single. Grazie al cielo il single maschio o femmina non  hanno niente a che vedere con lo scapolo e la zittella. Certo! Il single di oggi ha una casetta piccola ma molto moderna, va ad aperitivi, va in palestra, fa vacanze con amici e amiche, è sempre a qualche concerto, ha tempo per mostre, eventi. Le mie amiche single? Sono ragazze interessanti e dinamiche, sempre in giro...altrochè zittelle! La stessa cosa per la parte maschile del gruppo. Siamo ben lontani dall’immagine che ne avevano i nostri genitori. Quindi basta usare i vestusti termini scapolo e zittella, non si usano più nella lingua comune! Single, ecco il termine corretto. Un giorno parlando con una persona mi aveva detto con occhi ammiccanti che lui era free, ecco in realtà questo vocabolo non l’ho mai sentito molto nel linguaggio comune e personalmente mi ricorda più un servizio gratuito …free a parte i single sono un nuovo numeroso gruppo e per quanto bello l’amore, il matrimonio e tutto, quando mi ritrovo una valanga di piatti da lavare perché la mia dolce metà ha deciso di invitare la sua numerosa famiglia…bhe hanno tutta la mia invidia!
