Scallywag Whisky Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Gather a bunch of great Speyside single malts, blend them together, and you’d be going through the same process Douglas Lang did to create Scallywag Whisky. A blended malt like the rest of their Remarkable Regional Malts, this whisky is the embodiment of the essence of the region the malts are collected from.

Malt and sherry work to make this an interesting little dram that’s malty, fruity and… well I’ll let DL tell you the rest in the pre-review quote below.

Scallywag Whisky Review: Details and Tasting Notes

Scallywag is a Speyside blended malt scotch.

In Douglas Lang’s Words: Scallywag Whisky

Scallywag is a Small Batch bottling created using only the finest Speyside Malts including, amongst others, spirit distilled at Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes Distilleries. Bottled at 46% alcohol strength and proudly non chill-filtered, Scallywag embodies all that is Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky – beautifully sherried, richly spiced and truly charming.

Spanish Sherry butts care for this spirit as it matures, naturally imparting the distinctly dark, rich color. Inspired by a long line of Douglas Laing family Fox Terriers, the Scallywag name and endearing canine character are most fitting for this richly spiced and deliciously sweet Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky.

Scallywag Whisky Review: OVERALL

Scallywag Whisky Review

Not bad. The Scallywag Whisky is a pleasant blend of Speyside malts and it brings with it a nice fruity essence. The char and cocoa give it a bit of complexity, but it doesn’t lend itself to having a fully rich character. It’s a whisky I could easily sip on while cleaning or puttering around the apartment but not something I’d reach for on the regular. If it weren’t for the price I’d say it’s a great starter scotch.

SCORE: 82/100 (B-)
