Sarbajit Singh Passed Away

Sarbajit SinghIndian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was attacked by two other inmates with bricks at the Kot Lakhpat Jail last week, succumbed to his wounds at in Jinnah Hospital Lahore early on Thursday.

“I received a call from the doctor on duty at 1 am (1:30 IST) informing me that Sarabjit is no more,” Mahmood Shaukat, the head of a medical board that was supervising Sarabjit’s treatment, said.

49-year-old Sarabjit sustained severe head injuries and was shifted at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Jinnah Hospital amid tight security after initially being treated at prison hospital.

A case against two inmates Rizwan and Amir, both of whom were on death row, had been registered under the offense of attempt to murder Sarbajit, who was convicted for his involvement in multiple blasts in Lahore and Faisalabad which killed 14 people.

His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf.
