This week we’re swooning for September’s birthstone sapphire. The beautiful gemstone, part of the Corundum family, makes for a gorgeous addition to any diamond engagement ring. It also lends a decidedly antique feel. Sapphires first were used in engagement rings during the crusades, when it was believed that the stones could reflect the fidelity of their wearers. When knights returned, they would inspect the color of the rings of their betrothed. emerged to popularity first in Victorian engagement rings, when it was popular to use gemstones to symbolize initials or letters. Sapphires would have represented the letter “S” in a custom designed engagement ring. In the Edwardian era, they were used as the central stone mounted into filigreed and intricately carved platinum settings. By the time the Art Deco jewelry era had arrived, sapphires were a long treasured tradition for engagement rings and made a fabulous addition to the bold geometric and Egyptian designs that were being popularized by the haute jewelers in Paris. Platinum 2ct Round Brilliant Diamond and Sapphire Engagement Ring
The first ring we’re obsessed with is this round bezel set 2 carat diamond that’s I/J in color and I1 in clarity. The round diamond is set into a cushion shaped platinum mounting giving it a fresh combination of shapes, sugarloaf cut sapphires are set in between the center and its perimeter with a subtle milgrain border surrounding the outer edge. The shanks have an additional .11ctw of diamond micropave so the ring sparkles from every side.
Platinum Octagonal Art Deco Diamond and Sapphire Engagement Ring
This funk octagonal shaped engagement ring is actually fairly traditional by Art Deco standards. Again with a sapphire surround, the center stone in this beauty is 1.64 carats with a K/L color grade and a beautiful VS clarity grade. The diamonds on the shanks are .12ctw and the Ceylon sapphires weigh .86 carats.
Platinum 2 Carat Round Diamond and Sapphire Engagement Ring
The halo ring that swept the bridal jewelry world by storm has its roots in the Art Deco era. We love any halo engagement ring that has an added flair, and a circle of rich blue sapphires is perfect. The center stone is a 2 carat diamond SI2 in clarity and K/L in color surrounded by .67 carats of sapphires. An extra helping of .19ctw of diamonds is set as micropave in the shanks.
Platinum Round Brilliant Ceylon Sapphire Engagement Ring
Our favorite ring du jour, this amazing cushion shaped setting is unlike any we’ve ever seen before. A pretty 2.08 center stone with J/K color grade and an SI2 clarity grade is surrounded by .81 carats total of sugarloaf cut sapphires that form a rounded cushion shape with rondels at each corner. The outer border is comprised of white diamond micropave, and more microwave is set into the shoulders and shanks of the platinum mounting. It’s incredible, unique, and definitely a big statement.
