After being featured on Disclosure’s track “Latch” in October 2012 Sam Smith has maintained a buzzworthy presence, churning out electro-pop tracks imparted with his soulful inflections every few months. Up next in his lineup of electronic gems is “Money On My Mind”. While it shares part of its hook with Snoop Dogg’s Gin and Juice, it is a bit more romantic than its 90s gangsta counterpart. He precedes his shouting “Money On My Mind” with “I don’t have”—an important distinction which gives the song a slightly different meaning than might have been revealed in its first listen. The bouncy piano samples that circle one’s head through the entirety of this song give it an organic grounding while the rest of the song relies on electronics and synths to express itself.
